3.1108 Remote Monitoring System for
Geotechnical Information
Project Abstract:
This project is about developing a telemetry system for remote geotechnical data
monitoring. This telemetry system will enable us to keep track of the health of
buildings, undergrounds, bridges and even pipes. Cracks may cause destructions
and serious ones may be dangerous.
The alarm is simulated by a applying a strain on a strain gauge. Whenever
there is a strain, the alarm condition will be triggered. Initially, when there is no alarm (no strain on strain gauge), the Wheatstone
full bridge is balance (V=0). However, when there is a strain on the strain
gauge, a potential difference on the Wheatstone bridge will be produced. The
voltage will be fed into an amplifier to amplify this voltage reading.
The strain gauge is connected to a microprocessor board. The voltage from the
strain gauge will trigger the interrupt pin on the board. The strain gauge’s
location ID will be then sent to the computer of the person-in-charge through
the transceivers and alert the person about the alarm.
A SMS will also be sent to the person-in-charge to inform him about the alarm.
This is to ensure that he is being notified about the crack despite not being
stationed in front of the computer.
